Safety glass

A guide into safety glass safety glass

What's the definition of safety glass ?...

A glazing is called "safety glass" when it has such properties that diminish the threat of injuries and robberies as a result of impacts, distortion or fire.

In Belgium, safety glass is norm NBN S 23-002 compliant and covers laminated glass with PVB (PolyVinylButyral), tempered glas (thoughened glas), wire-glass.

The selection of a type of safety glass has to be well-considered, depending on the threat against which protection is sought. It must be integrated in the joinery with equal safety ensuring properties (glass strips, frames, ...)

Our registered trade-marks are
DUPLIVER® for laminated glass. SOLIVER® for tempered glass.

Tempered glass
Thoughened glass (tempered) Soliver®is heated until its fusion point is reached and then it is cooled very quickly and uniformly. In case of glassburst, this process will ensure the protecting granulation effect.

Laminated glass
Dupliver® Laminated glass is an industrially glass product consisting of two or more glass panes permanently joined together by one or more synthetic interlayers (PVB). The composition is heated under high pressure in an autoclave. The interlaying Pvb melts, bonds the glass panes and becomes transparent.
There is a commom nomenclature to distinguish the several types of laminated glass.
A numeric code reveals the thickness of both the glass and the pvb-interlayer. De numbers before the dot, show information -in millimeter- on the thickness of the glass and the number of glass panes used in the assembly; the number following the dot indicates the number of PVB-layers that were used.
For exemple, dupliver 44.2 is a laminated safety glass consisting of 2 glass panes each 4 mm thick, seperated from eachother by 2 PVB-interlayers each being 0,38mm thick.
Soliver also manufactures specific burglary proof glass and bullet proof glass, both being laminated safety glass products. For these special compositions Soliver uses its own nomenclalure.

Armed glass
This wire-glass is most commonly used as a roofing on factory buildings. The property being opaque allows a diffuse light, while the built-in metal grill strenghtens the glass and assures safety.
